The internet has a trust problem. We’ve got the answer.

The web is drowning in poor quality content and it’s destroying people’s trust in brands.
That was one of the biggest themes to come out of brightonSEO this year.
As SOZO’s in-house copywriter, I attended numerous talks around AI, search, content, and brand visibility, and one theme stood out from the rest: audiences are becoming increasingly sceptical about what they see online. And really, we can’t blame them.
Every time we browse the web or pick up our smartphones, we’re overwhelmed with AI-generated content, undisclosed ads, inauthentic influencer partnerships, clickbait articles, spammy search results, and brands saying one thing on their website and another everywhere else. The web is noisier than ever, but that’s not necessarily more useful.
Research from YouGov found that 81% of UK adults are concerned about the trustworthiness of online content, while PWC found that only 30% of consumers actually trust brands. Before someone reads your service page or fills in an enquiry form, they’re already looking for reasons not to believe you, which means that your website, social media, emails, and overall brand presence will need to work much harder to prove that you’re credible, consistent, and worth listening to.
So, how can you cut through the noise and earn trust online? Here’s how your brand can stay afloat.
The rapid rise of AI slop
AI has made it quicker than ever to create content. But quicker doesn’t always mean better.
One of the phrases that came up again and again at brightonSEO was “AI slop”, meaning generic, low-value content that’s created at scale, often with little human thought or expertise behind it.
But the issue isn’t with AI itself. At SOZO, our in-house content team regularly uses AI in their workflow to support research and planning. The problem arises when brands use AI to churn out unoriginal content without any human input at all. This leads to generic copy that sounds exactly like everyone else and doesn’t resonate with your audience.
AI-generated content can really damage search rankings. Position 1 Google results are reportedly 8x more likely to be human-written, suggesting that original expertise and genuine human insight are powerful signals in search.
We’ve seen this first-hand with one of our own clients, where their organic rankings dropped after they filled their website with low-quality AI content.

Google’s own guidance on creating helpful content makes it clear that trust is an important part of the puzzle: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (EEAT). And to get the T, you need to demonstrate E-E-A signals wherever your brand shows up, which is something that AI alone simply cannot achieve.
Trust is built through consistency
Another major theme highlighted at brightonSEO this year was the issue of inconsistent messaging.
Your customers don’t experience your brand in neat little channels; they experience just one single brand across multiple touchpoints. So, if your website copy is professional and polished, but your social media content is AI-generated, your emails are overly salesly, or your product descriptions are vague, your audience’s trust will start to weaken and they’ll start to question who you really are.
The strongest brands have consistent messaging across every platform. Their tone of voice feels recognisable, their messaging is clear, and their expertise is visible both on-site and off-site.
Consistency is becoming increasingly important as search behaviour changes, too. People aren’t just discovering brands through traditional Google results; they’re searching across TikTok, Reddit, YouTube, AI platforms, reviews, forums, and much more.
Try asking yourself: if your website disappeared tomorrow, would your other platforms still present a consistent message about who you are? If the answer is no, then your trust signals need work.
How to build trust through good quality content
Here are five simple ways to build trust in a sea of AI slop:
- Prioritise clarity in your website copy. Your website should make it immediately obvious who you are, what you do, who you can help, and why your audience should choose you. If users have to work too hard to understand your offer, they’ll click away, fast.
- Make your content genuinely useful. Ensure that you answer the questions your customers are actually asking. Be specific and share practical advice, and always avoid vague claims and empty buzzwords.
- Show your expertise everywhere. Add named authors, case studies, expert quotes, customer stories, original insight, and clear sourcing in your content where relevant. It’s not enough to just say you know your stuff, you need to prove it.
- Be transparent about your offering. Make your pricing, processes, policies, credentials, contact details, and next steps easy to find. If you remove any ambiguity or uncertainty about your offering, your customers will be more likely to trust you
- Audit your messaging across channels. Your website, social media, email marketing, ads, and sales materials should all feel like they belong to the same brand. Consistency helps to build recognition, and that recognition builds confidence.
How SOZO can help your brand rise above the noise
Building trust is all about creating a joined-up content experience across every touchpoint, and ensuring that every interaction reinforces one clear message.
Our expert copywriters can help you sharpen that message and create high-quality, human-first content that gives your audience the confidence to take the next step. This might involve writing SEO blogs that demonstrate your expertise, website copy that turns interest into action, case studies that prove your value, or email and social content that keeps your brand front of mind – making sure that your messaging is aligned across all channels.
And while AI can be a useful tool, we have proof that the strongest copy still needs human insight behind it. If you use AI to write your content, we can help refine and humanise it so it’s more useful to your audience and more consistent across every channel.
