Sustainable web design
Designing a more sustainable internet
Most people don’t know it, but computers are responsible for a whole lot of pollution. First, there are the components (made from all sorts of materials like rare earth metals that are difficult to mine and associated with a great deal of industrial pollution), then there’s the electricity. Google actually uses more electricity than the nation of Sri Lanka, and China’s bitcoin mining alone is on track to emit more greenhouse gases than Italy by 2024.
That’s why at SOZO, we’re committed to being environmentally responsible corporate citizens, no matter what it takes. We recognize the impact that computer-based companies have on the environment, so we’ve made a simple yet big decision: either eliminate our entire carbon footprint all together, or at least reduce it anywhere possible. Our company’s Green Code of Conduct includes using completely renewable electricity, carbon neutral web hosting, structuring our website design to ensure less energy is used, and even our headquarters is green!
On top of it all, we regularly walk or bike to work and partner with suppliers who share our sustainable values… even our toilet paper is eco-friendly (www.WhoGivesACrap.org)!
Partnerships for the Planet
Why would a business make such a commitment? Especially one that is mostly internet-based? Simply put, because we understand the crisis is unfolding right in front of us…
You may not know it, but the internet’s carbon footprint is actually bigger than the airline industry’s! Yes, making computers causes a lot of pollution… but actually running them can cause even more.
Think about all of the computers, smartphones, servers and data centers out there. Each one needs buildings, shipping, power, and cooling to operate. Every time you type a word into a search engine, send an email, or watch a cat video, the resulting server activity creates from 0.2 to 7g of carbon dioxide. By 2040, the web could produce 14% of total global emissions!
Carbon Offsetting Projects, Providers, And Afforestation
In addition to the many ‘net zero’ policies in place, we also partner with 8 Billion Trees to support the wildlife protection and reforestation efforts being conducted around the world, and most importantly, in the Amazon.
By replanting areas that have been wiped of centuries worth of ecosystems, the biome in Brazil being reforested is making a dent in the global crisis. Plus, these new trees will absorb and sequester the carbon that is being produced on a daily basis. And, the more trees that are planted, the more Co2 that’s removed from the atmosphere.
While many of us are already doing our part to reduce our environmental impact, there are just some things that are nearly impossible to avoid (like driving to work). Luckily, in those cases there are several carbon offset providers that can help erase any last bit of carbon. You can check out a complete list here.
By companies working together, in different ways, to tackle the monstrous problem facing the planet, we’re generating a combined effort–with everyone involved–that we believe will be able to reverse the ravages of the last century. And, we’ve proven that helping the planet and eliminating your carbon footprint doesn’t mean that you have to compromise performance or distinction.
